It is not the gasoline that is dangerous
but the fumes that pose the real threat.
Gasoline fumes result from gasoline
vaporizing, and gasoline can vaporize in
any place in which it is allowed to collect—
the gas tank, a five-gallon storage
container, or the carburetor float bowl.
Vented gas tanks and other components
of the vehicle are designed to control
fumes, but gasoline can still collect in the
crankcase (oil sump), and possibly ruin the
engine or blow the truck into orbit.
