Aside from the truck's serial number what distinguishes a 1947 Dodge from an earlier year?

I think it is the door locks

It's got something to do with the doors. Not sure it's the locks though.

According to the "Standard Catalog of American Light Duty Trucks" (which is pretty thorough in describing year-to-year upgrades and changes) the only change to the 1947 Dodge trucks from earlier models was an across-the-board price increase.
