Ramcharger!
Just let the name roll around in your mind for a moment. Say it out loud. RAMcharger. RamCHARGER! It suggests an incredible power and speed, does it not? Yet, the word does not appear in any formal dictionary.
This issue’s cover vehicle is a 1985 Dodge Ramcharger, named as a tribute to a racing team that started undercover in 1958, using the talents of some speed-crazy Mopar engineers. While the motorsports Ramcharger moniker conveys supremacy and countless drag racing victories, Dodge’s full-size Ramcharger sport-utility vehicle, as a production vehicle and now as a collectible, more closely resembles comedian Rodney Dangerfield—a memorable name that gets no respect.
Illustrating the disrespect is an article written by Ben Stewart of Car and Driver magazine in 2019 titled “20 Awesome Old-School 4X4s for Kicking Your Off-Road Game up a Notch.” Stewart ran through a litany of makes and models, going back as early as the 1960 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, with the list dominated by Chevrolet, Jeep, Ford, and a smattering of Mercedes, IH, Suzuki, Nissan, Range Rover, Land Rover, and AM Hummer products.
Wait … where is Chrysler-Dodge-Plymouth? What happened to the Ramcharger?
Read all about it in the latest issue of VT … 10 pages are dedicated to showing off the 1985 Dodge Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector. Be sure to pick up a copy of the July/August 2025 issue of Vintage Truck magazine!
